The Seattle portion of the KL community met up and discussed changes that could be made to KL for everyone's benefit.

Things discussed include:
-Name
-Marketing
-Themes
-Content

We decided to create a separate website for the new Krazy Letter - something that shows more maturity. The changes discussed below address the issues discussed in the meeting.

------------------------------------

Krazy Letter will be moving it's discussion boards to a more "mature" name as part of the reorganization plan -

YoungTenacity.com

This change will indicate a shift in KL's intended member set - intelligent discussion between youth - broading and narrowing down our userbase at the same time.

Young means young people, of course - Teens, and perhaps people in their twenties. Tenacity means cohesiveness - a community which will stick together. YoungTenacity will have a motto indicating intelligent discussion - perhaps a greek/latin motto, or just "where teens have intelligent discussions" or something of the like. Tenacity itself is a complex word, and smells of complexity - something that people who say "LOL ROTFL" will not remember how to spell.

This new community will be based on a different bulletin board system - vBulletin - a much better and easier to use bulletin board system than Invision Power Board.

Please give comments to contribute so that we can plan our new community accordingly happy.gif

I'll get some of my smarter, non idiotic friends to join. Some can contribute pretty well to the forum.

Did that have anything to do with me? huh.gif

laugh.gif Well, people who are smart act stupid anyway just for the "lol"s. It may end up the same way either way.

Mmhmm, we are going to require moderation of all new user's posts. If they don't meet our high levels of intelligence testing (ie. ability to capitalize first letter of sentences, ability to think), then we will ban them. If after 20 or so posts they seem fine, we will stop moderating them.

You don't have to make it sound so exclusive. New members are going to feel awkward if they know they're being heavily monitored, and that might drive them away.

That's a good point. We don't want to make people feel as if they're under judgment. Neither do we want to come off as elitist.

So how about anyone who has something to say can say it... provided they can spell, capitalize, punctuate, and syntaxize correctly.

"Retards" will hopefully be driven away if they don't understand any of the content.

HerLoss is right. We don't want to promote a "Big Brother" feel to the forum. I suggest what we avoid doing is what djbob does on Helionet - no big warning signs on the front page or anything. Still, I see no problem with banning idiots who post idiotic topics and posts.

Also, we need to be careful not to have an excess of overly-arcane topics; after all, most teenagers exhibit intelligences from across the spectrum and most are somewhere in the middle. So, if a person can use reasonably good grammar (Mynck, there's no need to moderate minuscule things like capitalization/punctuation unless it gets completely out of control), post reasons for their beliefs in their posts, and refrain from hotheaded flaming, we should be fine.

One more thing: does everyone agree with my idea for the moderation of new posts until we are sure that the newcomers are decent posters?

EDIT: HerLoss? Haven't seen you in a while.

i think we should enforce understandable grammer, but if proper punctiation/spelling/capitalization isnt used, it shouldnt be a problem.

I spelled something wrong, didnt capitalize something else... but you still get my point, right?

(also missed an apostraphe)

How about default auto-capitalization? It just looks neater, you know?

Hmm....

We don't need strict moderation. Just ostracization works well enuff thanks. Maybe also a really simple quiz when you register, just to make sure that new members have the ability to make good contributions?

E.g. "What country is Tibet a part of?"
"What's the reciprocal of 0.2?"
etc.

Maybe that's a bad idea though. It'd have to be short. And honestly, even if you didn't know the answers, you could do some quick research to find out. All it takes is one Wikipedia search for "Tibet" to find out where it is.

Hey, we could test search engine use proficiency, even.

The new Krazy Letter will only allow name registrations in the A-Z alphabet.

Thus, it will make better names, so instead of names like: "omg555555555555555", it should encourage more readable, pronouncable, and typable names. e.g. Lappy instead of Lappy512, etc.

No, señor - mi asno.
PS: Although I had to use a translator to get my statement out, I was able to translate your statement without the use of one. Knowing multiple European languages rather fluently helps understand other ones happy.gif

Anyways, if we aren't moderating the first few posts, I suggest that we make every new member go through a series of questions on their first few posts. Right after they post, they will be sent to a screen that'll say, "Are you sure you used proper English grammar, spelling, and semantics? If not, revise your post." After that, the next screen will say, "Are you sure you picked the right forum to post this in?" And then the last one might say, "Are you sure you aren't spamming or advertising? Small posts that don't contribute are considered spam."

I was thinking of a 5 question quiz with basic questions that may/may not require basic research.

We shouldn't have a quiz or any questions after guests make posts, because we don't want them to feel like they're being accused even before they commit the crime. Let's just do what many other successful forums do and moderate 20 posts of every first-time member. Its worked well for everyone else, and it'll work well for us.
