Holy Shoes 3
I like punk, classic, grunge, and a little bit of emo.
Timebandit
I like Classic rock/ Dave Mathews type. I also like Punk Rock like gold finger. Even rock that is like Tokio hotel is good.
chuck

I like igneous rocks!

sedimentary are better than igneous.

Metamorphic rocks are much better. I mean, with sedimentary you've got shale. Metamorph it a bit and you've got marble. And coal turns to diamond. And silicon dioxide turns into quartz, amethyst, sapphire, topaz, or onyx.

Anyways, I voted for punk rock, soft rock, and grunge. Usually I like the more melodic ones. But where did you put the indie? And what is emo? Nobody really knows what emo is. It must have a million distinct definitions by now. And I've never heard of "heroic rock."

Sedimentary has deeper meaning, it has tons of layers.
Diamonds are for people who have a distorted perception of beauty.
Get a sedimentary rock.... or a potato!

And where's the alternative?
I don't judge music by it's genre so I have no answer.

Except for the most part, Rap=Bad.
There are some exceptions.
MFO
Punk, classic, progressive, death metal, a little bit of thrash metal, and grunge.

Rap is EVIL.
myncknm
Personally I stay away from the metal. I'll listen to most other genres of rock.

Oh yah well I like Metomorphic rocks!lol

And well yah I'm not really a metal fan. I like Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, and a lot of newer bands. My sister got me to like older bands. Basically anything that has instrumental ability(as my sister likes to say) and something I can just jam out to.
chuck
i find it hard to classify most music in categories, as there are alot of bands and it can get really hard to define boundaries.
MFO
Well some bands simply qualify for multiple catagories in my opinion.
purrflicta
i'm in a pop rock mode right now. Ok i have been for a while: most of the bands I listen to are described as pop/alternative.
QUOTE

so i havnt listened to much rap (i try to spare myself) but my only exception to that is Where'd you go by fort minor.
i like my friends old definition of rap: people throwing instruments around and yelling swear words.
chuck
I like alternative.
myncknm
But rap has nothing to do with swear words. Rap is a vocal style (and maybe DJ'ing too). The Red Hot Chili Peppers use rap, but they're fine. And most underground/alternative rappers do have some meaningful lyrics.

--Fighting for the distinction between gangsta rap and other forms of rap since 2005, myncknm.
djbob
Thank you, myncknm.
I personally like all types of genres and music. That includes rap, metal, etc. I guess there are some exceptions, but those are just the really weird ones.
punkrocker45
I like a lot of genres myself. Rap, modern rock, funk, (some) pop, punk, metal, classic rock, post-punk, (what could be considered) emo, metalcore, ska, rockabilly, psychobilly, blues, and 80's 'hair' metal (Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Twisted Sister, etc.)
Holy Shoes 3
Yah I found myself starting to like jazz, blues, skat, Dixie Land and things like that. But other than that I'm pure rock. New rock, old rock, hard rock you name it, I listen to it.
S.W.A.T
I'm not used to rap.But then, Linkin Park is cool.
punkrocker45
They are pretty cool. Have you checked out Fort Minor yet? Fort Minor has Mike from Linkin Park...it's entirely rap, but he has some really meaningful lyrics.
S.W.A.T
Nah, I haven't listened to them. I only listen to Blink 182, The Killers, Panic! at the disco and Fallout Boy now.
punkrocker45
Ah..I see. It's a shame Blink-182 broke up. Do you like Angels and Airwaves?
Holy Shoes 3
I do. I've only heard about 5 of there songs though. There not bad.

Yeah,I started to listen to them a month ago. Before that i was obsessed with Green Day.
punkrocker45
At least you had a good obsession before Blink-182. I'm obsessed with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, now, before that it was Motley Crue and Guns 'N' Roses.
S.W.A.T
Well, My previous ones were: Fall Out Boy, Green Day, Metallica, The Killers and 50 cent when I was 8.

myncknm
Guythz, Plus-44 ttly pwns Angels and Airwaves. Tom DeLonge was just being a stuck-up loser. </unsupported half-serious statements>

Well... me wub.gifs the old Weezer, the old Green Day, Nirvana and especially their unplugged stuff, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Deaths Cabs for Cuties, and djbob got me into the Cure.
punkrocker45
You're 10 right? If so, you've got pretty good taste in music for a 10 year old. If not, well, you've still got pretty good music taste. (S.W.A.T) and as for mynknm; The Cure, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day, are some of the greatest artists in the world.
myusrnm
If anybody goes and says Rap is full of swear words and then goes to listens Blink 182 I will hunt you down and kill you.

Oh, and I'd rather listen to Savage Garden then Blink 182...
punkrocker45
I find it funny, when people do that, it is a really hypocritical statement, to say that rap cusses too much, but they listen to Blink-182. I don't like all rap...but it's not because of the cussing, it's because of the fact I don't like how they sound when they rap.
myncknm
I heard from my radio station, which recently hosted/sponsored/whatever a Angels and Airwaves concert, that Angels and Airwaves uses pre-recorded audio to help their performance a bit when they're doing it live.
punkrocker45
*sighs* I hate that, too. I mean, if you really can't sing all that well, DON'T sing at all! Using voice fixer thingy ma bobs, is not a real display of talent, I mean hook me up to one of them and I'll sound like a frigging professional singer, and I can not sing to save my life.

I only know one band that doesn't use technology to change there voice or have the song play with them while there playing, and that's O.A.R. I'm sure there's more but even though O.A.R doesn't use voice things they put on a great show, and they sound really good.

Who is O.A.R?
Holy Shoes 3
A band............lol uhhmm. There more of an American version of Raggae music, if you know what I mean. Some people know them as a Jam Band? You know what I'm basically talking about. Yah, well, I think they're a really good band. My sister got me into them.

Yeah, listen to OAR...

there are tons of good bands you probably haven't heard...
(Especially when Blink182 is your favorite...)
punkrocker45
One band that doesn't use technology to change vocals even on recordings, is Walls Of Jericho. The screaming that is present on the album is what the lead singer (Candance Kucslain) really sounds like.
myscrnnm
I listen to classic rock mostly. But Mynck claims that my style is more like pop rock. So I voted for pop rock.

Nah, that description fits punk rock more. Rappers rarely use interact with instruments, let alone throwing them around.

Yup, all very good. BTW: myncknm is not 10. Hope I didn't ruin some elaborate hoax there tongue.gif
Joe
Beck is Psychadelic Rock, and he kicks ass.
Otherwise, classic and whatever the Red Hot Chili Peppers are.
S.W.A.T
Red Hot Chili peppers is Alternative Rock...
punkrocker45
Alternative Rock, is kind of a generic place to put them. They do a lot that relates to Funk, as well as alternative. The reason Punks run around and yell swear words is to fight the system. When it all started in England, it was used to tell the Queen where to put it, if you catch my drift. Now, I'm not making excuses for punks or rappers, but it's kinda understandable. Some rappers (Public Enemy, etc.) were political, in which they used the swear words to express how they felt about one issue or another, same as punk rock. Anymore, most rap is about going down to the club for some chicks, and other crap like that. Not all of it is, but most of it. Like Eminem, most of his music isn't about politics or anything like that, but stuff about women. Don't get me wrong, there is freedom of speech, but I just feel rappers, punks, metalheads, etc. should use that for a message that makes people think, instead of just about sex. Now, RHCP, did a lot of stuff about sex and not really about politics, but they viewed sex as a beautiful thing. I can prove this by the Guitar World interview with Flea, the bass player. I don't always listen to political music, but most of the music I listen to has a story behind it. Such as Armor For Sleep's album, What To Do When You Are Dead. It is the story of a man who committed suicide, and how he is coping with being dead.

Nah, they have a lot of deep stuff. I cite "Californication" and "Otherside," if you follow the interpretation if "Otherside" is about the struggle to quit drug abuse, which it seems to be. Oh and "Under the Bridge" too. "Give It Away" is subject to interpretation too, but with the lyric "What I've got you've got to give it to your daughter," I'm pretty sure that it's not about sex. Okay, admittedly, that's only one song of theirs that I can name that has a political meaning. Hmm, wasn't there some book they published explaining all their lyrics? Well, I haven't read it so, ja.

So... anyone else got to hear the track "Dashboard" of off Modest Mouse's upcoming album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank? It's like their old style with a bit more electric guitar and a bit faster tempo, and it sounds good.

do you know when the album comes out?

also, do you have the moon and antarctica?
myncknm
It comes out March 6, I think. And no, I don't have that album.

-----Edit------

Yeah, the radio station just confirmed the March 6 release date.

Alot is about sex and a lot of it is deep too. It's sort of a balance that they've reached. From what I get, Otherside is about drug abuse and the struggle that comes with it. I was merely making the point that they hardly ever work politics into their songs, just personal experience and their views on sex. The song "My Lovely Man" off "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" is about the late guitarist Hillell Slovak, he was their first guitarist, he had overdosed on heroin.
