More HDD space and a better color really doesn't warrent buying it.

I doubt that I will get the Elite, since I have already invested time into my current 360(work hours) and the trade in value at max for a 360 now is $320. Plus there are hours of downloads I would have to do over again, plus a couple hours to completley transfer my current stuff onto the new Hard drive.

The way I see it, Microsoft is screwing over a lot of Xbox 360 Premium owners with the Xbox 360 Elite. When the early adopters purchased the Xbox 360 Premium, I'm sure they thought they were getting the most high-end Xbox on the market. But now, if they want the best Xbox 360, they have to get the Xbox 360 Elite.

Now, regarding the Elite itself, I'm glad Microsoft is moving in the direction of most storage and going digital. However, this is like a Xbox 360.5, since Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox 360 Elite will only be using HDMI 1.2, which can't carry next-generation audio standards. Not to mention Microsoft is still going proprietary with the HDD bay. While you can argue that Sony has way more proprietary stuff than Microsoft ever will, any proprietary stuff that Sony DOES have is only proprietary because it's way beyond any other technology available (eg. Memory Stick has higher transfer speeds than other flash memory cards).

In comparing the PlayStation 3 to the Xbox 360 Elite, the Xbox 360 Elite is still far behind. If people are looking to the Xbox 360 Elite for multimedia, the PlayStation 3 is still a better choice. Sure, Microsoft has upped the storage capacity for use with videos and music, but performance is largely unchanged. What people need now is a next-generation storage medium and superior performance. The Elite still lacks internal IEEE 802.11 and no HD DVD.

While the Xbox 360 Elite is a superior value to the Xbox 360 Premium, it's still no match for the value of the PlayStation 3.

If the 360 is so inferior to the PS3, why does it have a fanbase at least 2x that of the PS3?

Fanbase does not equate to greatness. Not to mention you have failed to take several other factors into account, such as release date. Also, fanbase is not a definitively measurable quantity. I think what you mean is userbase.
