Im thinking of starting a SIP service using Asterisk, but am wondering if I should go with colocation or a dedicated server. Because it will run asterisk mainly, it needs plenty of cpu power, and not much hard disk space. i took a look at a few dedicated server providers, but in order to get a good CPU you also have to get a 160GB hard drive. Anyone have any recomendations?

I definitely don't think you can run it off a home DSL connection.

How much CPU power is a "LOT"?

A Celeron? A Pentium? A Pentium D? A multi-core Xeon?

I'd be more worried about the quality of bandwidth too, because you'd want low latency bandwidth for VOIP stuff.

A basic DSL line can handle a bunch of connections. the standard VOIP service uses only around .5KB/s~1KB/s.

I don't really know about how much of the CPU it takes, though >_>

Wikipedia mentions 6-7kbits/sec.

The main thing is that you want quality bandwidth, and a DSL line doesn't have quality uplink, which means that the QoS will be low.
