I'm thinking of doing ruby, since it's a great language, and there are a couple of great funny books on it.

ORLY? PHP 5 has an almost complete list of OOP features. Look into it PHP 6 will have 100% OOP compatibility
But PHP OOP uses the "->" operator for dereferencing, which is very awkward.
Dude, "->" is much more natural

Whatever. The point is that Java is better. It's more versatile. PHP is only used for server-side scripting, outputting HTML. Java actually has graphics libraries and such.
