But, I need some interesting free online textbooks.

I'm thinking of doing ruby, since it's a great language, and there are a couple of great funny books on it.
Humble Little Ruby Book (1.85)
Why's (Poignant) Guide to Ruby

So, has anybody got suggestions on what I should learn in this day and age? and where to find nice materials for them?

Whatever it is, it better be object-oriented.

ORLY? PHP 5 has an almost complete list of OOP features. Look into it tongue.gif
PHP 6 will have 100% OOP compatibility wink.gif
myncknm
But PHP OOP uses the "->" operator for dereferencing, which is very awkward.
djbob
Dude, "->" is much more natural tongue.gif

It requires 3 keystrokes, is made of two characters, and is harder to read.

You can macro it and use a syntax highlighter O_o

Whatever. The point is that Java is better. It's more versatile. PHP is only used for server-side scripting, outputting HTML. Java actually has graphics libraries and such.

PHP can't do this: http://myncknm.bravehost.com/Fireworks/
