Full Version: Second Demo

So, after a lot of work, I've got the second demo out. I appriciate the help of the people who tested the first demo and I was hoping to get same kind of feedback as the last time. This time the demo is about 6 megs and this actually concludes the first part of the game. May I point out that so far this has been just the introduction, so that's why there haven't been so many puzzles and stuff.

You can download the demo here

I'm very pleased with the quality of the feedback last time and I hope you'll keep up the good work. But this time I'd like you to focus on the story and the humour. Do they work? Why not? etc. Hopefully this time there wont be so many problems with the demo biggrin.gif

I assume that that ends part 1: Introduction
-I like where the plot is going 'cuz now he is going to destroy Kaiden as revenge,
hence the title vengence
-I caught some of the humor but i probably did the game a bit to fast
-i saw you fixed the mistakes from the first half
overall 2 thumbs up for this second part

umm, i gave up on the Finnish stuff

1st reply!!!

Thanks. Now I have four thumbs, yay laugh.gif And yes, as I forgot to mention, this is the end of part 1. There will be at least 3 parts, so this might turn into a proper game. Also, because I haven't written the story 100% clean (I only have a few notes, which I want to put in the game) and I do the game pretty much ex tempore, so if you have any ideas or things you'd want to see in the game, please tell.

Also I'm announcing three competitions (well, technically just one, since the prizes are the same):
1. What does the mage at Jimmy's say? (What does he mean to be exact. This might be the hardest)
2. Find 3 game quotes (there might be more, but I'm looking for certain three)
3. Find a reference to rap-music (there is a small reference. It's pretty hard to find, I think)

The prizes are that, the ones who finish one of those tasks first, will some how be refered to in the game. But if somebody is able to complete them all before anyone else, he will get his own character in the game.

freak out my homie dogs
ill be here all week! punk.gif

thats called martian rapping
Humpster
Ooookay... When I was talking about rap, I didn't mean that there'd be like real raping (I'm whiter than a snowflake and squearer than the most squearest squeare in the world). I ment that in some part of the game they talk about something that relates to rap.
Person from beyond
oh, i knew that!!!
okay
*thumbs up, smiles*
Humpster
Yeah, whatever. Can we get back to praising the game, please? I need my egoboost...
Person from beyond
oh yeah...
all hail humpster! King of humpster-ing!
myncknm
Sound/music volume control or muting would be nice.
The welcome might be better incorporated into the story. Like, implicit characterization, you know?
Ha, the evil laugh is a nice touch at the end of the introduction cutscene.
Shawn the Unselfish looks like Black Mage. And there's only one bed in that house...
Nice chicken.

typos:
Welcome 1: "wordplayes"
Welcome 2: "there are [a] few things", "it's world"
Welcome 3: "they still live in [the] time we'd call [the] Medieval Times." Don't any of you Finns use articles? tongue.gif
Welcome 3 and 4: replace semicolons (; ) with colons (: )
Welcome 5: "And just so that it happens, Death is our maincharacter" (And it just so happens, Death is our main character.)
Introduction cutscene Maurice: "That's propably why you don't remember you're name..."
Introduction cutscene Death: "I'm dead? How'd that happend?"
Maurice's church, book: "Death: I think that all religious litterature is the same..."
Igor: before meeting troll: "Deaht: Nah, he's no fun..."
Troll: first encounter after talking to Shawn: "Where do you think your[b/] going?"
Steve the Annoying: asking for granberry: "Death: ... cross the brigde."
Troll: after giving umbrella: "Death: Please! I went trough a lot to get this!"
Ogo's temple: "Priest: Please, keep you're evilness away from me!" (haha)
In Germ headshaman's house: "Death: Nope, nothing interessing here."

Wow... laugh.gif :
"Death: Hey, wait a minute... / Death: I'm not wearing any underwear!"

Overall, very nice. It was a very effective allegorical treatment of the interactions between the ethnicities and cultures of Greater European life. It'd be nice to have a few secret areas or something, though. And maybe some Zelda-type puzzles or battles instead of just walking around talking to people and searching for stuff.

Minor glitches:

The yellow lines outline the path that shouldn't exist.

I thank thee for your assistance. Now to the explenations:
-If memory serves me right (I just watched Iron Chef, so...), there actually is some button to control the sound. I can't remember it, but I'm working on it. But for starter F1 brings up a sort of a options menu,
-For the welcome, I don't know what to do with that. I just felt like it's important to know some things about the story and I tried to be as minimal as possible
-Shawn is a black mage. It says it when you talk to him for the first time. I know it might be a bit weird for a mage to send someone to another mage, but as far as I know (not that much really) BMs don't do that kind of magic. There weren't any room for Stevies bed, so you might think that maybe he's just visiting. The sign says 'Shawns house'. Not 'Shawn and Steves'.
-what chicken are you talking about? Anyways, speaking of chickens, I'm thinking about including something from Monkey Island III: el pollo diablo. I just have to figure it out where to put it
-the typos: I usually do this game in the evenings after a hard day and when I'm tired I make simple mistakes. I know these things but I just forget 'em. And btw. the are no articles in the finnish languages, so things might get mixed up in my head.
-I'm pretty proud of the underwear joke. When you see the bricks, you'd think Death might say something about them and them: underwear.
-Glitches: the some mistakes, that I haven't noticed
-The secret areas sound interesting, but I'm not sure how they'd work in adventure games. As for the puzzles, I must remind that this was the part 1, the intro. The game will get harder, for instance when you need some stuffs to do something, they won't tell them straight. Also I'm planning to put options to different events, like 'use', 'look' and 'talk'. I'm not sure what you mean with Zelda puzzles, I have only played one Zelda, and I don't know about the puzzles, you speak of. I was thinking more like LucasArts styled puzzles...

Again, thanks for the help (both of you). You will be credited at the final version. And thanks myncknm for teaching me new fancy words. But isn't anybody willing to try to solve the competetions?
Person from beyond
I am finaly saying something useful so pay attention!

Intro Death: with a vengence
or Death: With a vengence yeah.. mhmmm... capitolization!

far far away lets put a comma in there
doink
far, far away

Some say death is immortal though actually
comma between immortal and though

I think all book cases are spelled wrong... "intressing" huh?

I had a bunch of cool pictures of mistakes, but i cant figure out how to upload them...

No im not realy tring to get the answers for the competition, i cant find a good finnish translator

I cant find a good finnish translator

Ain't life a bitch?

Isn't it quite hypocritical to complain about my spelling when you make stupid mistakes too. tongue.gif Still, thanks for the checkup. You can upload screens via Photobucket (adding links). And aren't there competitions that don't require a good finnish translator (the words are in spoken language, so I doubt that you can't find'em anywhere)
Person from beyond
I dunno if u noticed or not i type all the time...

mmkay ill try that photo bucket thingy...
